Physical therapy (PT) has been proven to be beneficial to people of all ages with injuries or medical conditions that hinder their ability to move and function. A customized physical therapy program can change a patient’s quality of life by increasing function and mobility, improving overall health, and encouraging lifestyle changes.
Why is physical therapy so beneficial? Here’s how PT positively impacts those who choose it as a part of their health and wellness plan:
- Pain reduction/elimination. This is the most common benefit of PT. Physical therapists can reduce pain levels and in some cases prevent future pain through manual therapy techniques and therapeutic exercises. Additional therapies that can help include soft tissue mobilization and electrical stimulation of the affected area.
- Alternative to surgery. PT can help heal muscle damage and some ligament/soft tissue injuries, thus potentially eliminating the need for surgery. In the event surgery is needed, PT performed prior to surgery can help speed up the recovery time and process. Check with your doctor or surgeon prior to starting a physical therapy program.
- Improve mobility. Stretching and strengthening exercises can improve your ability to move effectively, regardless of current fitness level or age. For individuals who rely on an assistive device to walk due to injury or medical condition, therapy exercise can ease the stress and strain of movement.
- Treat sports-related injuries. From weekend warriors to casual runners, all athletes face the risk of injuries. PTs rely on their knowledge of human anatomy to develop exercise programs to recover from or prevent stress fractures, strained tendons, or torn muscles and ligaments. These exercises are designed to help athletes to return to their sports and activities.
- Recover from a stroke. Losing some degree of movement and function is common after suffering a stroke. Through an individualized care plan, PT can help to regain balance, restore proper gait, and strengthen weakened areas of the body.
Prevent falls and improve balance. Patients are usually assessed for fall risk when they start a PT program. If determined at high risk, a physical therapist will create an exercise plan to safely challenge and improve balance and coordination.
